who represents Kaduna Central consistuency has called for drastic changes in the NYSC scheme – He asked the governemnt to make the NYSC scheme voluntary Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Senator Shehu Sani Senator Shehu Sani Senator Shehu Sani who represents Kaduna Central consistuency has advised the federal government to make the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme voluntary or increase funding and provide insurance to the scheme. He said this after he met with the family of a NYSC member and consoled them. The youth corps member Lawal Kontagora was killed by unknown gunmen in Kaduna recently. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he was a 26-year-old, an NYSC member, serving at the Africdect information technology centre, Kaduna. He was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the Malali area on October 17. This happened in my constituency and he is part of my constituency. I have a duty to pursue this case to its logical conclusion. “If such things happen to others and they are being ignored, I virtually will not fold my arms and see this kind of things happen. “I am taking this issue to the National Assembly; we have to choose what to do and being a corps member. It is either the government makes the service year voluntary or there should be increased funding or insurance.’’ He also condemned the killing and asked security agencies in the state to fish out the culprits. The fact that the corps member was not protected, Sani said, “clearly shows how vulnerable the society is’’. “The very fact that we have not inherited a country that could not provide and protect us, shows that we should have been able to do better. Our young people are neither safe in primary or secondary schools, nor safe in the university, they are also not safe after the university,’’ Sani said. Alhaji Lawal Umar Kontagora, who is the father of the slain young man, said he was quite impressed with the condolence visit by Senator Sani. NYSC Orientation Camp: All You Need To Know, Preparation and Requirements for NYSC

NYSC Orientation Camp: All You Need To Know, Preparation and Requirements for NYSC
Have you received your NYSC call up letter or has the NYSC mobilization list being pasted on your University’s announcement board and your name is on that list, I would like to congratulate and welcome you into a new reality. A reality of service to your fatherland.
I wrote this post with the experience I gathered as a youth corper and I believe it will help you understand what NYSC means, the requirements and things you would need to use at the NYSC orientation camp.
NYSC means National Youth Service Corp and it is a compulsory one year service you would have to render to your father land when you finish your Bachelor’s degree in the University. It is divided into three batches: NYSC Batch A, B, and C.
For prospective corps members. Below are few Important tips on how to prepare for service to your fatherland.
How To Prepare For NYSC Orientation Camp
The NYSC Orientation Camp programme duration is 21 full days. The 21st day is the day you will leave the camp to your PPA (Place Of Primary Assignment). Once you see your name in the NYSC mobilization list, ensure that you do the following:
1 . If you are posted to a far state, especially to the northern part of Nigeria, try and find friends, who may be heading towards the same direction. This help you feel relaxed and comfortable on your trip.
2 . Ensure you buy your NYSC kit early to avoid last minute rush. The prices of NYSC kit tends to increase when the news of respective NYSC batches is out. You might be wondering why you would need extra white shirts, shorts, tennis and socks at the camp. This is because the ones provided at the orientation camps are of inferior quality and are useless.
3 . Get the following documents and items ready. We listed the compulsory and optional items according to their preferences.
IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS YOU WOULD NEED AT THE NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP
a. Statement of Result, WAEC/NECO, JAMB Admission Letter (original copies)
b. Valid School ID Card
c. Enough passport photographs about 50 copies.
d. Call-Up Letter (Please do not laminate your call up letter as you can be expelled from the camp)
e. A file (To carry the items above)
ALSO READ Jumia Nigeria Contact Address
NB: You are expected to get 20 photocopies each of items A,B, and D above. It might be more or less.
As for the optional and convenience items, You would them to avoid “borrow me” syndrome. Things like toiletries, towels, sponge, provisions, bed sheet, mosquito net, cardigan and cash. Trust me, the mosquitoes and cold are not friendly. Below are the optional and convenience items
OPTIONAL ITEMS TO FACILITATE YOUR SCREENING AND STAY AT CAMP
a. Stapler, two packets of pins and office gum (You will use this as you register)
b. Three white T-shirts and shorts. As said earlier, you will be given two sets but of inferior quality.
c. Two or three pairs of socks and a white rubber tennis shoes (for rainy days)
d. Bathroom slippers, mosquito net, sponge, soap and detergent, bed-sheet and Dettol
e. Two plastic buckets (buy it in the camp, to save you from carrying much load on your journey)
f. You would need enough money like N50,000 at hand and your ATM card. That was during my time. it might increase due to the economic situation of the country.
4 . Before you make your trip, make sure you phone is fully charged and maybe even keep an extra battery to always be in touch with family
5 . Small rechargeable travel light.
NB To make your stay at the orientation camp smooth and more comfortable, travel to the state you were posted early especially for those posted to a far state. It is best you go the day before the camp opens as going late will make the registration stressful for you.
Things To Expect Within the NYSC Orientation Camp
As soon as you enter the gate of your various orientation camps, you will see enough uniformed men. Your screening starts at the gate. Of course, you might be afraid, but just follow orders.

1. Thorough search
Your loads would be searched thoroughly as they don’t want any weapons or prohibited items like iron, knives, bombs, etc. within the camp
2. Registration
Usually, the first registration is normally for hostel/bedspace. You would be given tags to identify with. Do not misplace your tags as they would be collected at the place where you will collect your foam. Other registrations at the NYSC orientation camp will follow. Provide all necessary documents asked of you. Strictly follow instructions.
3. Your NYSC Kits
You will be given all your NYSC kits during the registration phase. They include shirts, shorts and shoes. To avoid stealing and for proper identification, use a permanent marker to write your Code Number (CN) on them. This Code Number is your temporary ID card that you will use in your stay at the camp. Without this CN, you cannot eat the free food offered in the camp.
4. Casual Wears will not be allowed
When you get your kits, only your white T-shirt, white shorts, white socks and white tennis shoe will be allowed for the 21 days in the orientation camp. Although, there may be times where you might put on your full NYSC kit i.e the Uniform itself.
5. Regimented Programme/Parade
If you are the type that wakes up late, you would have to adjust as you would have to wake up as early as 3:30am, so as to get prepared. A trumpet wakes you at 4am. Everyone would be expected to assemble at the parade ground by 4:30am. Praises and worship for different religions (Christians and Islam) will be said.
At 7am, you have your breakfast. You can choose not to eat the food given free at the camp or go to the mammy market and eat a more balanced diet. After breakfast, you will be called out again for the series of fitness and Skill Acquisition Entrepreneurship Programmes (SAED). After the programme, your take your lunch. 6. Your allowance a.k.a Allawe
Unless it has been increased, your first allowance will be N19, 800 which will be given to you in cash at the NYSC camp. and it will be in cash. You will also get Bicycle Allowance. This N19,800 will continue until you finish service. Some might collect state allawee, that’s if you are lucky. Spend wisely
7. Place Of Primary Assignment (PPA)
Your PPA is where you will be posted to do your work. Most Corpers will be posted to primary schools and secondary schools, few will be posted to the state capital and other places. Do not lobby or bribe anyone for your posting, especially the ladies. Just pray to God for a good PPA. Receive your PPA in good faith. After all, youths obey the clarion call under the sun or in the rain.
8. Always do your clearance
NYSC clearance should be taken seriously by all youth corp members. You would have to do this before you go home. It is very important because it registers you as a NYSC youth corper in the local government you were posted. Failure to complete your clearance before going home would see your subsequent monthly allowance/allawee not being recieved
Hope you understand the process on how to prepare for NYSC now. Share to others if you find this piece informative. Prospective corps members should seek more information at the various NYSC sites below:

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has instructed the newly sworn-in chairman of the state’s civil service commission, Bonaventure Ibebuike, to immediately work out modalities that will see 3,000 graduates employed into its workforce.
Okorocha, however, instructed that those to be employed must be computer-literate and must fall between the age bracket of 20 and 30.
The governor gave the order on Thursday in Owerri, the capital, while swearing-in the new Commissioner for Information, Obinna Nshirim, and a Special Adviser on Security, Hillary Opara, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Okorocha equally swore in members of the Judicial Service Commission and six new permanent secretaries.
The governor urged the newly sworn-in appointees to avoid corruption and personal enrichment but rather work towards contributing their quota for the betterment of the state.
He charged Ibebuike to work harder and bridge the communication gap between the government and the people of the state.

BREAKING NEWS: Group asks court to order Amaechi, Onu’s arrest

BREAKING NEWS: Group asks court to order Amaechi, Onu’s arrest

Onu, Amaechi
A group, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to order the arrests of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and his Science and Technology counterpart, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
The plaintiff also sought an order of mandamus compelling President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack both ministers in public interest and public morality based on the allegations of attempts to influence court decisions recently levelled against them by two Justices of the Supreme Court.
Two Justices of the Supreme Court, Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro, had accused Amaechi and Onu of attempting to influence the decision of courts in some election cases between 2015 and 2016.
Based on the allegations, the plaintiff filed the suit with number FHC/ABJ/CS/857/2016 through its counsel, Mr. Okere Kingdom, on Monday.
In addition to the originating summons, the plaintiff filed an ex parte motion seeking leave to properly commence the legal action as stipulated in the rules.
Joined in the suit as defendants are Amaechi, Onu, the Department of State Service, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The plaintiff, in its originating summons stated that “the allegations made against the 1st and 2nd defendants (Amaechi and Onu) by the two Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria… are grievous enough to warrant their arrest, investigation and prosecution by the 3rd and 4th defendants (DSS and EFCC).”
The group also alleged that the allegations were weighty enough “to warrant their removal from office without delay by the 5th defendant (President Buhari), who was also accused to have sent the 1st defendant (Amaechi) on the mission to ensure that the All Progressives Congress wins all their governorship election cases at all costs and by all means.”
It asked the court to declare that the failure of President Buhari to sack Amaechi and Onu “are grievous enough to conclude that President Buhari’s fight against corruption is window-dress, witch-hunt, selective, high-handed, vindictive, malicious and prosecuted with gross disregard to the rule of law.”
It therefore sought an order of mandamus compelling the DSS and EFCC to “immediately and without further delay whatsoever, arrest, investigate and prosecute the 1st and 2nd defendants (Amaechi and Onu), based on the allegations of corruption and attempt to induce or bribe the Justices of the Supreme Court”.
It also sought another order of mandamus compelling President Buhari “to immediately and without delay and without any further delay whatsoever sack or cause the 1st and 2nd defendants to resign from offices as Minister of Transportation and Minister of Science and Technology on the ground of public interest, public morality and to enable the 3rd and 4th defendants (DSS and EFCC) speedily carry out their statutory responsibility of arresting and prosecuting the 1st and 2nd defendants.”

60 per cent reduction on NYSC mobilisation

60 per cent reduction on NYSC mobilisation
By Editor | 31 October 2016 | 3:02 am
NYSC members
Sir: Several condemnation continues to trail the latest directive from the Federal Government mandating an over 60 per cent reduction in the number of the graduates to be mobilised for the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) this year across the tertiary institutions, with the Federal Government attributing it to the downtrodden and scorching recession in the nation’s economy.
Speaking on the authenticity of the information and also expressing her opinion on the latest development in a telephone conversation, the Dean, Division of Students’ Affairs, Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Grace Akinola confirmed that the university has also received a copy of the letter.
Akinola qualifies the directive as lacking forethought and completely out of it considering the subsequent implications that will follow the directives if allowed to stand. He however advised the Federal Government to have a rethink or make the scheme an optional one without unnecessary imposition.
“We also received the letter some days ago. The Federal Government complained of insufficient funding capacity due to recession. This is totally out of it. Where do they want us to put the remaining? We are to bring only 1,344 names out of the over 4000 due for mobilisation, we have already computed their data, not adding our Adeyemi affiliations.
There is one institution with 600 graduates; they are to bring 200 names.
The government is only toying with the future of these youths as they fully know that without NYSC certificate in Nigeria of today, no one will give them employment and even without a convincing hope of the employment in place.
The government should make it optional if they think they cannot afford it. Many other institutions have already concedes maybe due to their minimal figures and we are not manufacturing names here. The university VC has been restless on it to see if they could at least increase the figure for us. We cannot afford to leave out any of our students. All the names are mainstream and not leftovers. Are these youths to stay at home and turns a devil workshop?” she said.
This government has clearly proven itself yet again and now removing any iota of doubts that it is completely tactless, myopic and has nothing good to offer out of its Nazareth, rather than its undemocratic selective justice which is even the apogee of corruption!”

5 ways to maximize your time at NYSC camp

5 ways to maximize your time at NYSC camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), an organization set up by the Nigerian government since 1973 to ensure Nigerian students give a mandatory one-year service upon graduation, recently issued out call-up letters to certain individuals who have qualified to join the last batch for the year.
However, while these individuals are much elated to get the opportunity, seeing as completing the service year entitles one to employment, a number of them are perturbed as to how to cope with the three weeks “orientation” period spent in a military-controlled boot “camp” away from family and friends. Jumia Travel , therefore, suggests 7 ways prospective youth corpers can maximize their time at the NYSC camp.
Join the OBS
The Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS) is a great way to serve while in the camp. A very important unit of the camp, it will offer you opportunities to not only develop your editorial and media skills, you will get to know the key officers in the camp. It also gives you a measure of authority and allows you to get an exemption from some of the camp activities which you may be averse to.
Run a small business
You can actually make money while at the orientation camp. You can offer services such as hair dressing or laundry to others in the camp who need them for a fee or you can rent a stall at the Mami market and sell food items which most corpers need from day to day. It is a great way to hone your business skills before you are launched into the labour market.
Do an online course
The orientation period does not have to be all activities and socializing, you can further develop yourself on the side by registering and going through a short online course during your stay. The good thing about online learning is that it is flexible so you can actually plan it around the time that you will be leaving the camp.
Socialize and actually meet new people
The NYSC scheme was originally established to encourage oneness among citizens in the country and promote national unity. By sending these individuals to other states, the expectation is that they mix with people of other tribes, social and family backgrounds and learn the culture of the indigenes in the place they are posted. Rather than sticking to yourself all through the orientation process, use your spare time to actually fraternize and get to know the people in your platoon and camp as a whole. You would be surprised how many new things you will learn about Nigeria and what connections you may make for the future.
Start applying for jobs
The orientation period is not too early a time to start sending out your CVs to potential employers. The NYSC orientation can actually serve as an avenue for corpers to share job information and career resources, so take advantage of that and start early.

SERVICOM OFFICERS TASKED ON SERVICE DELIVERY

SERVICOM OFFICERS TASKED ON SERVICE DELIVERY
SERVICOM Focal and Desk Officers in the NYSC have been urged to serve as role models for ethical practices aimed at achieving effective service delivery.
The Acting National Coordinator of SERVICOM, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli, made the call at the networking/committee meeting of the Nodal, Focal and Desk Officers, which took place at the New Keffi Hotel, Keffi, Nasarawa State.
She advised them to continue to adopt standards, principles and core values that will drive the service delivery processes of the scheme excellently.
"In the face of public service challenges as it relates to Corps members mobilization and funding in this period of recession, there is need for SERVICOM Desk Officers of the Scheme to begin to do the seemingly impossible and think outside of the box to add value to the delivery of services to the satisfaction of Corps members and for the common good of every Nigerian," she said.
Emphasizing the importance of the SERVICOM committee in networking meeting, Akajemeli noted that it provides a platform for sharing of information, successes, knowledge, experience and best practices among officers with a view to improving service delivery to various stakeholders.
She thanked the NYSC Management for the encouragement and support being given to the SERVICOM Section and called for the sustenance of the gesture.
