NYSC: The Journey To Self-sustenance

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has come a long way since its inception by Decree No 24 of 1973 in response to the nation’s post- civil war challenges. The then military administration saw it as one effective way of harnessing the energy and potentials of the educated youth population for the implementation of the policy of reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation. To ensure its successful take-off, the government, then, spared no expense.

Soldiers confronting Boko Haram terrorists in the North East are mourning the death of Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali, described as a gallant, battle tested and trusted patriotic soldier of the Nigerian Army.

The Theatre Command Centre of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri, said Ali, nicknamed, Sarkin Yaki [Chief Warrior], was the Commanding Officer, 272 Task Force Battalion at Mallam Fatori in Northern Borno.

A FORTNIGHT ago, the decision of the Federal Government through the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to cut down the number of eligible graduates of Nigerian universities for the 2016 Youth Service, caused public outrage. A group, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to order the arrests of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and his Science and Technology counterpart, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

The plaintiff also sought an order of mandamus compelling President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack both ministers in public interest and public morality based on the allegations of attempts to influence court decisions recently levelled against them by two Justices of the Supreme Court.
